Wild, unforgiving, and spectacular, nature’s attributes define Alaska. In this frontier state that stretches from the Arctic Circle to the Gulf of Alaska and from near Russia to the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, the climate, the terrain, the ecosystem, and the wildlife make themselves felt at every turn. They have become the stuff of legends, humbling even the most cynical of visitors.

There are two take-home lessons about weather in Alaska. Lesson one: it can and does change quickly, so even if you are going on a two-hour outing, be prepared. Carry rain gear and extra layers of clothing almost everywhere. And if you are scheduled to go somewhere in a small plane, realize that bad weather may keep that plane on the ground. By the same token, realize that if you have been dropped off at a wilderness lodge or such by a small plane, you may get stranded at your destination for an extra day or two. More >
