Sharks – superorder Selachimorpha
Aug 27th
Sharks are formidable hunters with few natural predators when fully grown. Most have a streamlined body, powerful jaws with several rows of sharp teeth, and acute senses, especially smell. They range in size from the whale shark to squaloid sharks less than 12 inches (30 cm) long. Sharks are most abundant in warm temperate and tropical waters, their habitats ranging from coastal areas to open oceans and deep basins. Some even venture into tropical rivers.
Most sharks have a torpedo-shaped body that allows them to cut through water, although several bottom-dwelling species have a flattened body, similar to that of rays. Unlike bony fishes, sharks have rigid fins that cannot be flexed or folded, yet their fins are nonetheless efficient for steering, propelling, and stabilizing the body during swimming. More >

It is an accepted convention to visualize the classification of the animal kingdom as starting with the Protozoa, the single-celled animals typified by the amoeba and ending with the mammals, which includes the human species. This resulted in a catch-phrase, less used today than formerly ‘from amoeba to man’. More >
Deep Sea Fish

The most abundant fish species and vertebrates on Earth are not one of the shallow-water species such as the sardines or herrings that are found in enormous shoals, but a small mesopelagic species of bristlemouth. Bristlemouths and lanternfishes account for more than 90 percent of all fishes collected in deep sea midwater trawls. More >
