Selvaggio Blu Trek in Sardinia

Said to be the toughest trek in Italy, as well as one of the most beautiful, Selvaggio Blu is a 45 km (28 mi) hike around the Gulf of Orosei on the east coast of Sardinia, the Mediterranean’s second largest, island.

In the late 1980s, Peppino Cicalo and Mario Verin, two Tuscans, conceived the idea of finding and linking a network of shepherds’ and charcoal burners’ paths, long unused, around the Gulf, keeping as close to the sea as possible. These paths are only used by wild pigs and sheep, and arc so overgrown with Mediterranean vegetation that they are difficult to recognize – even the blue painted arrows that point the way quickly fade or become hidden, and taking a knowledgeable guide with you is a necessity.
